This former villa used to be the residence of Hendrik, Baron of Oldenzeel, born on February 17th 1823.
He original came from Haarlem and married Theodora, Baroness de Billehe de Valensart. in Maastricht.
They had 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons. The daughters Anna-Ferd and Zoe were maids of honour for Princess Clementine of Belgium and music instructors for King Leopold!
The other daughter Maria never got wedded. Son Hendrik left for New York and son Albert became major general.
As from 1886 the family Van Oldenzeel resided in the estate “Mon Refuge’ in Houthem-Sint Gerlach, in those days addressed as “Provincialenweg” nr 197, later nr 285 and presently known as “Sint Gerlach” nr 43.
Divers inhabitants resided there and the last were the family De Ruiter-Maatje.
After Worldwar II and the severe winter of ’44 the family De Ruiter-Maatje moved to Limburg, the land of milk and honey, according to Truus Justina De Ruiter-Maatje. As from 1951 the family including their 4 children, moved into the property Provincialenweg nr 285 – later Sint Gerlach nr 43- and Mrs De Ruiter started up a guest house, named “Hotel De Ruiter”.
Until her decease in 2005 Truus De Ruiter-Maatje was active in the hotel. She died in the 90th year of her life and became herewith the oldest hotelkeper in the Netherlands!
The building is made of marl stone, coming from the Limburgian marlstone caves. In the years 60 and 70 the building was reconstructed whereby the villa-character disapeared.
Under the present hosts Jose Lamerichs and Cyril Janssen, the interior of the building got totally renovated.The guests rooms and lounge are furnished with mostly antique furniture. Antiques are the passion of Jose and Cyril! In the furture even an antique and artgallery will be realised!
Nowadays the exterior, mainly the front facade will be restored in the original marlstone state.
The back facade will be restored thoroughly in the near future.
